Budae Jjigae is a type of Korean soup (jjigae) which is similar with western soup. Budae Jjigae is also called 'Army Base Stew' because this dish probably originated during Korean War. A time after Korean War, foods especially meat were scarce in Seoul, South Korea. Some people made foods by using U.S army bases facilities and combined it with any foods that they had. They put hot dogs, canned ham, or spam ( I don't know what is spam here ) in a large pot with boiled water. Then, it was mixed with a Gochujang (red chili paste) and Kimchi.
Budae Jjigae is a traditional spicy soup which is still popular nowadays. People add modern ingredients such as instant ramen noodles, sliced cheese, sliced sausages, baked beans, ground beef, dropwort, onions, green onions, tteok, tofu, chili peppers, macaroni, garlic, mushrooms and other vegetables in season. Uijeongbu city which is bordered by Seoul to the south has many army bases and it is famous for its Budae Jjigae. If you go to South Korea, don't forget to try famous Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae in 'Uijeongbu Budaejjigae Street' where there is a high concentration of buddaejjigae restaurants.
Budae Jjigae that I've ever tried in one of Korean restaurants. |
My review : Well, probably the taste has already adapted to Indonesian taste, but I estimate that is not really different in the basic. Salty and spicy. The serving is a bit too much for me. This is a big portion. For whoever want to try this dish, I recommend you to take a notice to the portion before you eat, so you won't leave a waste. Don't like salty and spicy food? It'll be better for you to choose another menu.. kekeke~
