Budae Jjigae is also called 'Army Base Stew' because this dish probably originated during Korean War. A time after Korean War, foods especially meat were scarce in Seoul, South Korea. Some people made foods by using U.S army bases facilities and combined it with any foods that they had. They put hot dogs, canned ham, or spam ( I don't know what is spam here ) in a large pot with boiled water. Then, it was mixed with a Gochujang (red chili paste) and Kimchi. ![]() |
